Got A Boat With An Outboard Motor? How To Keep The Motor In Great Condition

A boat provides you and your family with hours of fun in the sun. If you live in a warm climate, you can enjoy your boat for most of the year. To make sure your boat runs well for you, you need to keep it maintained. One thing you need to do is to keep the outboard motor in great condition. Follow the tips below, and you and your family will not have to worry about something going wrong with your boat motor.

Watch Type of Gas You Use

Refer to the service and owner's manual for your boat, as it will tell you what type of gas you should use for your outboard motor. Using the right type of gas is important, as it can affect the engine's performance and life expectancy.  One type of gas your manual will likely tell you not to use is ethanol gas.

Gas that is mixed with ethanol attracts water into the fuel tank, as well as other parts of the engine. This could lead to problems like:

  • Motor stalling
  • Performance issues
  • Clogged fuel filters
  • Clogged carburetor jets
  • Rusting
  • Sludge and gunk in the engine
  • Fuel system contamination

Over time, ethanol gas can cause engine death.

You should find high octane gas that is alcohol free at many gas stations. If you are not sure, ask the gas attendant.

You need to use a gas stabilizer. There are many types available, so contact your outboard dealer to see the type they recommend for your boat, and how often you should use it.

Flush the Engine

Flushing the engine is important to keep your motor in top condition, especially if you use it in salt water.  This is because salt can corrode the aluminum that is found in the outboard motor. Refer to your boat owner's manual to see how often you should flush the engine. Flushing the engine replaces the old water with fresh water to remove salt. Do this as soon as you can so the salt does not have time to evaporate and leave salt deposits behind.

Inspect Fuel Line

Part of maintaining your boat engine is to inspect the fuel line often during the boating season. Look over the fuel line for any leaks or cracks. Check the tank for any corrosion, and make sure there is no rust on the fuel clamps.  Check all fuel line fittings to make sure they are sealed well.

The best way to keep your outboard motor in peak condition, is to have your boat serviced by a skilled marine mechanic, such as at Mid North's Play Powersports & Marine. Do this each year before the boating season starts.
